“To Err is Human” – we are all human which means we all make mistakes. It’s time to accept this and help our teams grow by supporting them through errors as well as teaching them how to prevent adverse events. A culture of patient safety is one of shared values, beliefs, norms and procedure related to patient safety among members of an organization, unit or team.  We must look at the environment where our teams work to prevent error from happening and withhold individual blame when an error does occur. We must look at the systems in place and improve or change them to avoid future adverse events.

About the Speaker: 

Jessica graduated from Gwinnett Technical College with her Associate’s in Veterinary Technology in 2003. In 2011, she earned her Bachelor’s in Veterinary Technology (cum laude) with a combined focus in clinical practice and hospital management from Florida’s St. Petersburg College. Jessica has been a part of the VCA family since 2005 having spent time in emergency, specialty, and general practices. She has served in a variety of roles and is currently the Regional Technician and Assistant Director for the South Atlantic Group (AL, GA, NC, SC, TN, FL, KY, VA, IL, IN, MO). Besides VCA, Jessica has worked at Auburn University in Auburn, AL as an ICU Supervisor in the Small Animal Teaching Hospital and was adjunct faculty at a local technical college for their Veterinary Technology Program. She has been a speaker at veterinary conferences and continuing education programs throughout the years and continues to enjoy these engagements. Jessica currently sits on the Georgia State Board of Veterinary Medicine as the first ever LVT appointed and on the executive board of the Georgia Veterinary Technician & Assistant Association (GVTAA) as their Vice President. She is also the immediate past President as well as a previous Fall Continuing Education Conference Coordinator. Jessica serves on committees for the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association’s (GVMA), is a member of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) and actively served on a committee and was one of five veterinary technicians selected to serve on the American Animal Hospital Association’s (AAHA) Veterinary Technicians Board Input Group. She currently sits on the advisory boards for various veterinary technology programs. In 2021 Jessica became a Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional and QPR Gatekeeper to help better support the mental wellbeing of veterinary professionals. In August of 2022, Jessica will begin working towards her master’s in veterinary clinical care at Lincoln Memorial University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Jessica’s special interests include leadership and team development, mentoring, practice management, and public speaking and instruction.

This program is a live continuing education presentation targeted toward a veterinary technician audience. As such, it is a part of Boehringer Ingelheim’s Vet Tech Champions (TC) program. Janet McConnell graduated from the Veterinary Technician Program at Harcum College in 1981 and has worked as a technician in clinical, management, and education roles ever since. She is currently the Program Director for Veterinary Nursing Development at NVACompassion-First Specialty/ER hospitals, a network of more than 100 ER & Specialty hospitals across the country, where she drives the education and career development for veterinary technicians and assistants.

Janet is passionate about growing the veterinary technician profession, and co-developed and is the program director for one of the first NAVTAapproved veterinary assistant programs, at Brookdale Community College, in Lincroft, New Jersey. She is the immediate Past President of the New Jersey Veterinary Technicians and Assistants, is the New Jersey State representative to NAVTA, and in 2015, was named NAVTA’s Veterinary Technician of the Year. Janet firmly believes in making learning fun and memorable!

Appropriate pre-anesthetic patient preparation prior to the administration of any anesthetic drugs is critical for anesthetic safety. Preparation includes evaluation of general and specific diagnostic test results, especially in patients with comorbidities like diabetes and renal disease. In this case-based session we will discuss crucial diagnostic testing and, based on the test results, will develop stabilization plans and anesthetic protocols for safe anesthesia in every practice.

About the Speaker: 

Dr. Tamara Grubb is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia & Analgesia with a strong focus in pain management. She owns an anesthesia/analgesia/continuing education consulting practice which serves both small and large animals (VetAACE). Dr. Grubb is a national/international educator and lecturer, a certified acupuncturist, an Adjunct Professor of Anesthesia & Analgesia at Washington State and is President-Elect of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management’s (IVAPM). She is co-author of two books, including ‘Veterinary Anesthesia & Pain Management for Nurses & Technicians’. Dr. Grubb’s favorite achievement is winning the Distinguished Teaching Award at two Universities.
