Harold Davis - NAVTA Treasurer Credentials/Certifications: BA, RVT, VTS (ECC) (Anesthesia & Analgesia) Number of years as a Credentialed Vet Tech: 43yrs (46 years in the profession) Why/how did you decide to become a Credentialed Veterinary Technician? I didn’t really know the career path existed until I became a pre-vet student, working to gain veterinary experience for veterinary school. I worked as a veterinary assistant and enjoyed caring for patients and the variety of job tasks. I had the opportunity to take the state credentialing exam to become a Registered Animal Health Technician (that’s...

Blog Author: Lorelei D'Avolio, LVT, CVPM, VTS (Clinical Practice-Exotics) CVTS Chair My first veterinary job was cleaning kennels for $5.65/hour, and I loved every cheesy smelling, chunky-vomit-filled, feces-under-the-fingernails second of it. After graduating college with an unrelated degree, I took the position and wondered what someone who loved animals but didn't want to go to vet school could do. I had never heard of a veterinary technician, nor did I know what credentialing or licensure involved. A few months in, I was promoted to "tech-in-training." At the time, licensure was required in...

Blog Author: Mariel Hendricks, BS, RVT NAVTA Member at Large When I first entered veterinary specialty surgery in 2012 as a “baby technician,” I joined a team of older assistants that had molded their surgery days into a well-ran, smooth machine.  It was like watching a daily masterpiece unfold before my eyes from start to finish!  I knew my energy to learn a new aspect of veterinary medicine and my love for surgery would get me into the department. Still, I was terrified when I stepped onto that tile floor with the...

Name: Ryan Frazier Credentials/Certifications: BS in Marketing and LVT Number of years as a Credentialed Vet Tech: 18 years Why/how did you decide to become a Credentialed Veterinary Technician? I can always remember wanting to be a vet when I was younger. In high school, I learned more about the veterinary industry. I thought becoming a Credentialed Veterinary Technician was better because I wanted more of the nursing care and did not want to be the one performing surgery. Being years in the field, I made the right choice. Why did you volunteer to serve...

Blog Author: Melissa Evans LVT, CVT, VTS (ECC) NAVTA CE Committee Member I love fresh food. I love farmers' markets, fresh fruit and vegetables, giant salads, and warm soup. I choose not to eat meat. I don’t have a big sweet tooth, but dark chocolate is a weakness. I’ll always choose salty over sweet. Barbeque potato chips are the best food ever made. When I get hungry, it’s not pretty. My brain stops working very quickly when I don’t have fresh food. I’m a terrible person to take on road trips because, despite...

However, what’s not been clear is how to appropriately feed domestic indoor cats. Some captive animal species in zoos and laboratory rodents have been shown to contrafreeload, which may be defined as the willingness to work for food (or in other definitions the preference to work for food) when the...
